Moil Castle
Kyleakin, Isle of Skye.
The story goes that a certain Norse princess called Saucy Mary" married to a MacKinnon chief built the castle. In medieval times Moil Castle was known as Dunakin. In those days it was a stronghold of the MacKinnon family. The remains are in a rather poor state since the family left the castle in the 17th century.
The castle is believed to been have built somewhere in the 15h
or
16th century. Moil was used by the Norwegian princess as
a way to collect toll from passing ships. Norwegian vessels were exempt
from the charges. Storms in 1949 and 1989 further damaged the
fragile structure. However, recent work has stabilized the castle.
Sadly, there is not much further information available
about Moil Castle. We will update this page as soon as we are able to locate
further details about this structure.
